We all know that eating three meals a day is important. However, you should not keep that pattern if you want to skip the uncomfortable feeling of heartburn during pregnancy. This does not mean that you should skip meals. Instead eat more meals (around 5 to 6) but they should be lesser in terms of amount. Small but frequent meals are highly recommended because this allows proper digestion. In addition, you should also avoid eating until you feel full. Too much food in your stomach can also trigger your heartburn. Eating slowly during each meal is also recommended. Aside from increasing your chances of overeating, gulping down your food can also cause indigestion and reflux.

Just like what most medical experts advise, it is important for you to drink at least eight to ten glasses of water a day. However, drinking a large amount of liquid during a meal can cause heartburn. Thus, make sure that you only sip during your meal. To ensure that you do fulfil the amount of fluid intake required, you can consume your glasses of water in between meals.

If you have a favourite chewing gum, now is the time to enjoy it. Heartburn during pregnancy is said to be relieved when you chew gum after you eat. This is because the action stimulates the salivary glands which help neutralize acid.

Try to sit or stand after each meal to give you enough time to digest your food and to prevent acid from coming back to your esophagus. Lying down or bending over should be avoided as these actions can cause reflux. In addition, avoid eating or drinking anything two to three hours before you go to bed.

It is important to keep your upper body elevated even while sleeping to ensure that your stomach acids remain where they should be and to speed up digestion. Make use of your pillows to prop up your head and upper chest while in bed.
Avoid wearing tight clothes, especially those that are tight around the waist and stomach. Wear loose dresses and shirts to ensure that your stomach does not experience more pressure than it should thus preventing you from experiencing any reflux.

It is common knowledge that smoking is harmful to you and your baby. But, you should know that smoking can also trigger heartburn. The valve located between the gullet and the stomach becomes relaxed when you smoke which increases the chances of reflux to occur.

If heartburn during pregnancy becomes unbearable, you can ask your doctor for antacids. Don’t self-medicate. It is imperative that you not to take any medicine without your doctor’s advice.
