The four main food groups can be used as your guide on what to eat during your pregnancy and they are as follows: fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, protein-rich foods, and dairy products. There may be times when your pregnancy diet may seem difficult to maintain because of frequent appetite fluctuations especially during the first weeks of your pregnancy. In this kind of situation, it is not right to skip meals whenever you feel sick or are experiencing nausea. Remember, the little one inside your tummy needs food coming from you. The trick here is to take small but frequent meals whenever you feel okay and the nausea and sickness are not yet there to bother you. Luckily, your appetite will soon come back to normal by the middle of your pregnancy. This is the time when you should take back any lost nutrients so eat healthy foods included in your pregnancy diet. Expect additional weight gain because of your increased appetite. Take vitamin supplements recommended by your doctor. Aside from following your pregnancy diet, your doctor will also recommend that you take vitamin supplements to ensure that your diet while pregnant is on the right track. Traditionally, following a healthy diet is already an assurance that a mother and her baby are getting the right number of nutrients. But as years passed, it was discovered that taking antenatal vitamin-mineral supplements is as important as eating right. Thus, these supplements became highly recommended by most doctors for their pregnant patients. When a woman is pregnant, she needs a larger amount of vitamins and nutrients than usual. These vitamins and nutrients found in foods may not be enough therefore supplements are needed. Some important vitamins and minerals needed during your pregnancy are Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Iron, Calcium, Vitamin C, Vitamins B6 and B12, Potassium, Zinc, Iodine, and Vitamin E. Take these vitamins according to your doctor’s prescribed amount to avoid overdosage that could bring harm to your baby. Stay away from foods that could be harmful to your baby. You will notice that as you follow your doctor’s strict pregnancy diet, there are several foods that you should not eat at least until you give birth to your baby. Though these foods were quite safe when you were not yet pregnant, they could be detrimental to your baby?s health if you eat it now.. Say no to the following foods: Cold cuts and unpasteurized dairy products. These kinds of foods are more prone to bacteria called Listeria Monocytogenes. Because pregnant women have a suppressed immune system during pregnancy, they are very attractive to these kinds of bacteria. Symptoms like fever, chills, muscle ache, and back pains can be mistakenly accredited to their pregnancy while, in fact, listeriosis may already be present in the body. Perhaps the mother can overcome the illness but the fetus may suffer the most. Pre-term delivery, miscarriage, and still birth are all possible once hit by the illness. Aside from possibly harming your baby, caffeine can also have a negative effect on you. Since it is a stimulant, your heart rate and blood pressure will increase whenever you consume it; both events are not recommended for pregnant women. If you really cannot live without caffeine, it is best to ask your doctor how much you can consume without harming your baby. Following a strict pregnancy diet may be hard especially if you are not used to living a healthy lifestyle.
